Results of Assembly Meetings
At last Tuesday’s Leadership Assembly Meeting excellent support was expressed indicating that we should move forward with the school ministry as one of the array of ministries offered by our parish.
The same result was true of the testing of staff commitment at our meeting of Thursday, December 4.
This weekend (12/13-14) in the new narthex, we will have posted these results on the newsprint used during the meetings. Very strong support was also given to begin the raising of the start up costs associated with the school. Members of the school feasibility task force will be present in the area of the posted newsprint to answer questions.
The four statements around which clear strength of consensus emerged were: 1. Comprehensiveness of the work of the School Feasibility Task Force is satisfactory. 2. There should be a parish school ministry in the “array” of parish ministries. 3. Quality programming sponsored by the parish shall be maintained in all ministries. 4. If and when appropriate, funding of start up costs is assured, the parish will proceed to the hiring of a head of school/development person and/or other staff necessary for launching a school ministry.
It is our hope that the school ministry can begin in the school year 2005-2006. Further information will be forthcoming about certification from the Archdiocese, and pre-registration for the school, and other details. Of course, like all of our surrounding parishes, a preferred prerequisite for participation in the school will be parish registration at St. Madeleine’s and an established record of participation in the parish in terms of time, talent and financial support.

St. Madeleine Sophie Parish Goals Statement on a Parish School We have heard significant support for a parish school ministry and affirm support to the extent that it is feasible. We will initiate a full-scale study to engage the parish community in shaping a parish school ministry. The study needs to address the unconscious and unspoken assumptions about a school. It must investigate capital needs, possible approaches and interim steps. Feasibility must take into account the impact on current ministries, demographic projections, plans of neighboring parish schools, support of parishioners with children in other schools, grades to be included and the number of children and families which can be served. The relationship between our present quality, comprehensive faith formation program as a basic offering to all parish families and their children, and the added enhancement of a school ministry must be carefully studied.
School Feasibility Task Force
With the Parish Goals Statement in mind, the School Feasibility Task Force began its work with the leadership of Fr. Jim Picton, Bruce Laing, members of the parish and staff of the Faith Formation offices. Consultants included Dan Sherman, Sr. Marilyn Geiger, and Judy Vitzthum.
After months of gathering information, resources and conducting a survey of school aged families, and the preparation of a status report on April 15, 2002, the task force completed the School Feasibility Task Force Report and presented it to Fr. Jim and the Pastoral Council on September 19, 2002. The final School Feasibility Task Force Report to the Pastoral Council was presented on May 22, 2003.
Next Steps
Recommended next steps including a timeline are noted in the most recent report to the Pastoral Council on May 22, 2003
